The reliable north-easterly breezes feed the warm air directly up onto our favourite flying sites (Aguergour and Ait Ourir) on the edge of the High Atlas mountains. Aguergour take-off rises some 500m above the plains. As the sun warms the plains below, a constant flow of smooth thermodynamic lift sets up, allowing us to soar high above the Berber villages, an abandoned fort, hundreds of children, mosques and wandering flocks of sheep and goats. All the ingredients for a perfect afternoon flying! Cross country flying is also possible on the plain in front of take-off. Ait Ourir takes a slightly more westerly wind direction with a ridge offering many miles of soaring. Further into the High Atlas, spectacular flying opportunities abound. For example, towards the end of the week our safari meanders south through some unforgettable scenery to the infamous Tiz’n’Test pass. Conditions here can be strong in the early afternoon, but for evening flying the 2000m take-off (1,500m height difference between take-off and landing!) presents us with stunning vistas of the sweeping Sous valley far below.
One of the most exciting experiences of living in Morocco is taking part in a tour in the Sahara desert.
